Woman’s Missionary Union challenges Christian believers to understand and be radically involved in the mission of God.
What is Woman’s Missionary Union?
WMU® is an organization with one purpose: to help the church carry out the mission it has been given by God to reach the world. WMU provides training and resources to aid the church in its mission.
WMU began in 1888. It has always been true to its basic purpose: missions. WMU supports the Southern Baptist Convention and its International Mission Board and North American Mission Board.
The vision statement of WMU is: Woman’s Missionary Union challenges Christian believers to understand and be radically involved in the mission of God. Jesus told His followers to go and share the gospel (see Matthew 28:18–20). Missions means obeying these words of Jesus. WMU wants to help all believers share the gospel in their communities, in the nation, and around the world.
WMU works on four levels: national, state, and associational, and in the local church. National WMU, state WMU, and associational WMU provide help to the local church WMU. On all of these levels, WMU’s work has six objectives (purposes, goals) that form the heart of all that WMU does. Each of the objectives is based on New Testament principles. These objectives are:
• Learn about missions
• support missions
• Do missions and witness
• Develop spiritually toward a mission’s lifestyle
• Participate in the work of the church and the denomination
“PRODUCING LASTING FRUIT”
The studying theme is a four year curriculum. HBNA WMU will use various scripture passages to learn more about what it means to produce lasting fruit:
· First Year: Setting fire on the land
· Second Year: Working the ground
· Third Year: Planting
· Four Year: Harvesting
More specifically, we will be guided to a greater understanding of the watchword for this emphasis in John 15:16- You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.
